It is the second day since I cut the chicken door in my coop. 5 weeks old and they still are not all going outside. I have 20 chicks, 14 are aboaut 5 weeks, 6 are 2 weeks. I thought they all would be happy to be out, but only 8 have taken me up on the offer of play time outside.

Yesterday it was 90 degrees here. Could that be why they are staying in? They were all in the coop napping when I checked on them about 4 p.m. When I went out to close the coop about 9 p.m. several of them came out and I had to wait for them to go back in.

Today it is supposed to get up to 75, (much cooler) maybe they will decide to go out today. I may have to put my 2 week old babies in my cat carrier so I can get some work done in their coop today.

They will venture outside when they get up the nerve. It usually takes me chicks at least 1 week to stick their head out of the pop door.

Yeah, they're afraid of everything.

Also, mine are out early mornings, and after the sun gets past the trees in the PM, but their run is not shaded (it is a large yard) so they tend to stay in the breezy coop in the heat of the day. Today they were out at noon when a large cloud passed over.

Hi Tomato Lady from Olympia

My run is south facing, so my ten like to go in the coop to take naps and dust bath a lot in the last week with the heat wave we had here in the Pacific NW. Going from 90 to 70's - YAHOO!!!

I put my chicks out in the coop at 6 wks and finished the run 2 wks later at 8 wks of age, they weren't affraid to go out in the run or go back in the coop on their own when it got dark.

Good luck with your little ones.
