Getting a maran on sunday! What color should I get?

I'm getting a 20 week old maran on Sunday! SO excited!

So my question is- what color should I get? The options are: black copper (don't really want this because I already have black stars), blue copper, splash, and wheaten.

Any other advice about maran's is great too. Do they go broody? Are they freindly? Good layers?

Does it matter to the egg color which color I get? Do some not lay dark eggs (I know cuckoo's sometimes don't.)

Name suggestions are good too

Good choice getting a Marans. As far as color goes it really depends on what tickles your fancy. I happen to be partial to Splash Marans but I also have Black Coppers and Golden Cuckoos- all are very sweet birds.

They do tend to go broody a lot (at least my Black Coppers do). Egg size is XL and they are great layers.

As far as egg color goes it depends on the line the breeder has, ask if they can show you general egg color for the types you are considering. Black Coppers are said to lay the darkest eggs but that is not always the case so ask your breeder.

Also, remember egg color changes depending on laying cycle, feed etc. They do tend to lighten up over time.

Overall- Marans are a great bird with a gentle and sweet disposition. They make excellent pets, layers and breeders- plus I hear they taste good too
