Hello, We live in Northern MN. The plan is 7 chicks. Only because I have 7 names- Billie Jean, Steffi, Martina, Monica, Chrissy, Venus & Serena. (Any tennis fans out there 😀). Anyway, thinking of these breeds: black astrolorpe, barred rock, buff orp, prairie bluebell Egger, cream leg bar, cinnamon queen, partridge Cochin, salmon favorelle, Wyandotte or Easter egger. They are all available where we are going per their chick calendar. Any thoughts on these types, if they will be good for a beginner and if they’ll get along??

Depends on what you’re looking for, if you’re looking for good layers or brooding etc. I just got 3 barred rocks, great layers. Each chicken breed has specific characteristics and temperaments. As long as they are raised together or integrated properly they should get along. All flocks will have a pecking order though.

Salmon Faverolles are very friendly and docile. So if you get those don’t get a generally dominant breed (I don’t see any on your list of options) like a Rhode Island Red. Black Australorps are also usually good tempered birds. Cochins will be good in your climate. Salmons Favs were my first chickens (those are them in my profile pic). Im all about the heritage breeds.

A few of the breeds you mentioned are hatchery specials meaning they are designed and bred by hatcheries and sometimes it’s hard to know what they have mixed to get those breeds so I wouldn’t recommend those. They’re very in vogue right now and I’m actually getting a couple Rustic Rocks in a few weeks but I’m building a free range flock and i read somewhere they are good for that. So based on your reasons for getting chickens I would steer more toward the cochins, australorps/orpingtons and salmon favs.
