I am thinking of getting another chicken, but am debating if I have the appropriate room. quick responses are appreciated as I am supposed to go get my new hen in the morning. Here is what my set up is like: the floor of the roosting coop area is 4x4, they are obviously on the roosts up high and not on the floor though, then they go down the ramp to an enclosed coop area that is 4x8 where I have my food and water etc..., but I usually have my "coop" open to a free ranging type area that is an additional 25 sq ft. Hope that makes sense. I'm wondering with the space I have, how many chickens can I have in that type of set up?

About 10-12 in that size coop but your run should be a bit bigger for that many. The run needs to be closer to twice the size of the coop floor space.

Cindiloohoo, thanks for writing so fast. So, how I am doing my math, if I am right, my coop is 48 sq ft total, and then the outside free range area that is around 25 sq ft. You are saying the outside area should be more like 100 sq ft? Roosting space on the sticks, how much room do you allot each hen to hunker down on? I know they technically only take up about 12 inches of the roost stick each, but do you give more room for them to shift around a bit? Or do hens like to cuddle so they don't really need the shrugging shoulders room?
