Getting nervous and need suggestions...

I would let the neighbors know you have chickens and they really need to make sure their dogs don't free range the neighborhood. i have seen to many bad stories!!

Maybe you could make a coop with a very large run and they can chill in there. I know a fence would be great but 3 acres might run you some cash. Besides they are just one of the many predators out there in the country!

please use shooting the dog last resort. i know in some states using a 22 or paintpall guns will be abuse but if you kill it out right, your OK. I know, make no sense.

PS. Congrats on your move, i'm jealous~

Have you considered a Chicken Tractor? They can be moved around to different areas, so they can get fresh grass and bugs. The only problem we have had, to get them predator proof, makes them heavier....thus harder to move. We have to move our's with a dolly and I get inside to herd chickens so they don't try and escape under while it's lifted or get their leg caught under the run as it's being slid or set back down. They can be a pain sometimes, but might work for a temp solution, until you see how neighbors' dogs and other critters are going to respond to your chickens.

I purchased a 10 x 10 dog fence off Craigs list for $75. Added hardware cloth to the top and bottom. And a tarp for shade. It can always be moved. I was going to used for a temporary shelter, but know I think I might add more panels.

Gotcha! Yeah I understand not wanting to build a large run. I have a decent sized coop and run, but my joy lies with letting the birds roam our fenced 8 acres. They really never leave 50 yards of the coop, which I have no qualms with because they seem to really dissapear once they hit the woodline.

You'll love it in the country. I'd have it no other way.

We are on 8.5 acres fully fenced but still have critters that get inside our fence. It does keep out neighbor dogs which are much worse in the country. Plus everyone thinks they can dump their unwanted animals out here, it is a crime what happens to them. Please start saving to fence your yard, we have field fence up and it was the main reason why we bought where we did. It is inexpensive and has been up for 30 years and with minor maintenance is still working. I would never not have a fence. Saying that I still keep my chickens cooped up in a pen or a tractor, hawks love chicken and I don't share.
