One of my ducks hatched her eggs yesterday and left 3 eggs behind. So I went to check the eggs out to see if any had pipped or just died and I noticed tiny pink/red bugs crawling on the eggs.
After some looking online, I'm pretty certain that they're Northern Fowl Mites. I've never seen these things before and I've had ducks for almost 5 years. I combed over my white drake really well, but I didn't see any crawling on him and I couldn't find any of the white sacks at the base of his feathers.
As a precaution, I'm cleaning out the entire nesting area today. Does anyone know of something I can put down before I put down the bedding to kill/keep mites away? It needs to be duck and duckling safe.
Also, is there something I can put directly on the ducks just to make sure they're not getting the mites? I've read about a few things that people do for chickens, but I want to make sure it's safe with ducks too.
Thanks for any advice!
