I have two 8 month old Muscovys. They were not sexed when we purchased them, which we didn’t mind. The farmer we purchased them from told us we’d know their genders as they get older. He said if they were males they’d hiss, be very large, and they would have fan like tails. Well our two (Greg and terry) do not hiss the coo and sound like pigeons. Hard to say they are large when they are the same size and look almost identical. Some days they fan out their tails, other days they don’t. They are extremely shy and they like doing their own thing. I say they tolerate me as food bringer but outside of that they want nothing to do with us. I thought they were boys based off the internet but they recently started hanging out in their hut more. I figured it was because it’s been cold the last few weeks but I looked today and there are a lot of feathers in there.

I'm not an expert, but if they're cooing, then that seems more like a female to me. Either way, they're very cute!

Yea I was just out there again and it’s definitely a “coo” they have never once hissed. I remember when we picked them up their father was hissing at us the entire time.

Muscovy drakes dont hiss -- there is no sssss sound. Its a huffing sort of sound often rhythmically as the exhale. Its loud when the are excited.

Without you telling me that they are not huffing, going only by the photos, I would have expected them to be drakes. My flock is all drake rescues. I had a sweet female rescue and she had to go to my son's for a "quiet" life where there were 3 girls and only 1 drake.

Our girl had much smaller and less vivid carruncles than my drakes and smaller and less vivid than your two. She had a sweet tapered tail. My boys fan out their tails and wag them in excitement.

Might you record the sound your two are making and share it ?

They do not huff or make any noise other than cooing or a quack like noise if they get spooked. It’s honestly fine I’m just going to have the vet come check them out.
