I'm curious what you supplement your flock with when it's cold or molting! Every few days I've given our flock some high quality canned dog food I don't have any use for. 5 birds have had great molts and beautiful feathers and 2 are still finishing up their molts. A couple times I have tossed them some dry cat food and on Thanksgiving their protein boost was leftover turkey.

I have 2 that are molting heavy so I've been throwing them some meal worms. I don't know if it's the meal worms or the winter wheat grass or what, but the yolks are friggin orange. Made a Lemon pie over the weekend, looked like a radioactive Mustard pie...

I give mine a treat blend of mealworms and tiny shrimp that I get at the feed store. I also switched them to all flock from layer, as none of them are laying right now. I gave them a can of salmon cat food also, when they were looking at their worst.

I feed Meatbird crumbles year long, those are 21-22% protein. I'll toss mealworms occasionally and they'll get meaty leftovers like turkey carcasses or steak/pork chop bones. I don't have any other molters with which to compare, but I feel like mine molt about as well as they can.

So.... are you worried about the cold weather and if it's affecting your chickens who are currently molting in this cold weather? You could try to get a bag of feather fixer feed and see if that helps speed up the process.

I review pet products for a company and right now I have over 20 cans of high-quality canned dog food, I might donate some but I have so much I thought our chooks would love it and it must help!
