Giving protein during molting/cold weather

I'm in Canada and it's really hard to find feed that's higher than 16% protein unless you feed layer or chick feed. I throw a handful of scratch out every two or three days just to entertain them, especially in the winter. But their favourite is tuna! I only have 5 chickens, they're pets so I don't mind spoiling them a little. Every few days I'll open a can, the dog gets half and the girls split the rest.

While I agree it's cheaper to just feed a balanced poultry feed, it's also about quality of life. I don't want to eat the same thing every day, so why should my chickens/dog/horses have too? Everything in moderation though.
