Hello,
Glad to join! I will be getting chickens for the first time in March! Does Anyone have recommendations as to what kind of chickens I should get? I am looking for good layers and cold hardy breeds! Very excited to join the chicken craze! Thank you!

Click on the learning center at the top of the page. Study the forums and question and plan away. Come spring you will be ready to start your flock.

There's an article in the Learning Center titled (I think) "Pickin' the Right Frickin' Chicken", that would be one place to start. There are also breed reviews you can look at here on BYC. Then there are the members on your state thread that might have some advice (just type your state name in the search box to find your state thread).

Just keep in mind, breed characteristics are generalities and each bird will have it's own personality which may or may not match those generalities.

You can post on your state thread - just put name in the search box and it will come up. Then you can ask what breeds are the best layers and do best in the climate.
