I need help with How do i keep the gnats off of my two hens! And YES I do realize there is another big gnat post!!! but I tried slogging through all the replies and I couldn’t find the information I needed it was just Way too much. Can somebody maybe just give me some highlights as in what can i do to keep the gnats from pestering my two free range hens? I think I’ve heard vanilla helps but do I need to be in applying vanilla extract directly to their combs? The gnats are little tiny things that bite.

Buffalo gnats. Yup my thread got a lil long. You need to spray permethrin to drop the numbers.

Just about every place sells it but that needs to be the active ingrediant. Follow all instrucrions.

We looked into using permethrin after reading other posts. I wanted to try something nontoxic that would allow us to continue using the eggs (chickens who come into contact with permethrin will have it show up in eggs up to 3 wks after initial treatment). We have tried vanilla extract diluted in water. This has seemed to help keep the numbers down and off the combs of our chickens. We also hung vanilla car air fresheners in the coop and this has helped a ton!

Do you just spread it on the chicken combs?
