the pat 2 days my coop has been infested with some type of gnat. i serched the sits but the gnats that have been menchened are alot biger than the ones i have. these are so small you cant see them un less i look up in the lite. i cant even see them on me without looking real close. they do bite so i know were the are. anyone else have this problem?

* Oh, yeah!! We get them here is SoFl at times-- usually when rain is coming & humidity is rising. Dusk is the worst. . . Like mosquitoes, I find they dislike a part vinegar spray on your skin and in the area and B-6 in your blood, so take your vitamin!!

As for the coop, the vinegar spray should work there at least temporarily. . . . .

[Sugar Sand Farm]

In north Florida we call them sand gnats. and they are terrible. They come out at dawn and last until the sun comes up then start all over at dusk. Taking care of animals is terrible when they are out. I was just thinking the other day some bug company should look into a spray or cream that will work because nothing I have found last longer than a few minutes. They are so small they come right through the screens and get into your carpet. I get hugh welts when they bite me. Give me misquitoes anyday at least you can kep them away with bug spray.

You can get rid of them using a No-Pest strip which is safe to hang in your coop/barn/house and which will help with most flying insects for 3 months. They are made by Vapona, Black Flag, Home Hardware and others. Cost is $8-12. Avoid hanging over food preparation areas. Worth every penny, we've used them for years.!

I believe it was Chickenboy who said use tea tree oil and water, put in small spray, shake well and spray. My husband swears by DEET but I hate that stuff!

thanks for the info. yes miki and d.k. that is the kind. frosty the bufalo gnat is much bigger than these.

Sometimes I have trouble with them in my Duck pen.. YUCK

I put up fly strips and if its real bad I put down a VERY LIGHT dusting of seven powder.
Put I only do that if its bad once or twice a year.
