I always suspected that they would at least make something think twice about prowling around the yard, but I now have confirmation that a flock of 5 (Three ganders and two geese with one, solitary gosling to protect among them) will actively run off a raccoon.
The other night they were freaking out, yelling and posturing. They were also fighting with each other, so I wasn't entirely sure what was going on there. But the next night (last night) I decided better safe than sorry. I do have the duke traps set up at different points, but I baited and moved the live trap to the spot in the backyard where they were looking/charging at most often.
Sure enough, right in the middle of my backyard, there was a coon in the trap.
Not only did they keep that rotten thing away from themselves, but they also kept it away from a turkey hen with two remaining poults that was hiding in some tall weeds 20 feet away from where the geese normally sleep/doze/spend the night.
Go geese!
