We have 2 broodies running around our farm, one (Luna) have 8 chicks and the other had 3. We sadly lost one of her's to a hawk 2 weeks ago. Our first hawk casualty in 5 years. Earlier today I heard a chicken scream and scream. Ran outside and saw a hawk fly off, without a chick thankfully. I quickly checked the chicks who were all over the place and saw Luna, looking a bit PO shaking out her feathers, walking up to the garden to round up her babies. I can only guess what happened there, but judging by Luna's body language that hawk got a beating! You go, girl!
Neither she nor the chicks got hurt. I'm so proud of her for being such a good mom and protecting her chicks. Wish the other broody was as good.
We spent a frantic half hour looking for one of her chicks only to find it hiding in our house, under a bed. Mom was MIA and completely unaware of the drama.
