Okay so the nanny goat i bought on saturday has had a really fat, grumbly stomach since i got her, i figured it was probably since she just had a baby recently or something. maybe a change in food. WELL, this mroning i went out to get her to feed Whimsey & there was Cud Upchuck everywhere!! what?? She has been getting some alfalfa & grain since i havent been able to get local hay yet & i want to keep up her milk production.

she actually looks better now & not so bloated-looking and her tummy isnt grumbling but what the heck?? her whole face was green from it too and she kept trying to 'kiss' me

Sounds like she may have had some type of blockage that wasn't allowing the food to pass. Once the pressure builds up enough there's nowhere for it to go but back out. Certain toxins can also make them vomit. I had a doe with acorn toxicity and she had projectile vomiting for 2 days.

And as a side note....alfalfa isn't very good for goats.

If it is alfalfa hay, it is good for goats. Many people also give alfalfa pellets if they don't have alfalfa hay.

I would keep a very close watch on your girl. Goats shouldn't be throwing up. I would take her temp and see what it is. If it is high, she really needs to see a vet.

I'd give her some Baking Soda. It could be indigestion. That'll help her. My doe only ever puked a day before kidding....may wanna watch her if she's bagged or anything not having had her long and all.

She is bagged but everyone (here and online) that has seen her has said she wasn't pregnant. now that she's puked she doesn't really look it either. I have been letting my baby goat nurse her and also been milking the other side(that doesnt work so well).

I moved her to a pen that's outside of the kitchen window so i can keep an eye on her.
she isn't hot at all.
she's acting normal
she's been going to the bathroom just fine too.(1 & 2)

that would be wonderful if she kidded but her back end looks normal... i just tricked my mom yesterday into believing she had tripletts...i wouldnt knwo what to do if she had any, lol.

Alfalfa hay (or pellets) can cause urinary stones in goats (& other ruminants), which is why you shouldn't feed it. A little bit here and there isn't the end of the works, but it shouldn't be their normal hay. The stones can get lodged in the urethra which usually equals a dead goat.

I read onlien that it can make them bloaty also. i noticed my little guy was getting bloated looking so i started feeding him grass clippings from the mower. i can't mow the grass everyday though so i am stuck waiting til someone can call me back about hay.

does timothy or orchard grass cause any problems? i can buy that just up the road, it's just more expensive than the currently $3 local hay.

I didn't think it was good for them. I've never fed mine alfalfa hay at all. They get a decent grassy hay mixture.

Timothy is fine. I've never heard of any problems with orchard grass, but I've never used it either. Peanut hay is good too if you have that around.

We had lambs do that sometimes and our vet said they were eating to fast. We had to put a few large rocks in the trough so she wouldn't gobble her food down.
