I got a young gold deathlayer chicken which I suspect to be a ??? Well I am not going to tell to avoid influencing any one. I know it is early but the chicken is 4 weeks old. I have a harder time sexing young chickens with a rose comb or with a pea sized comb. I have my suspicion and will open it up for everybody to join the guess.

All pictures are the same chicken with same light but different angle. If it is what I think, will it be a keeper.

Never heard of this breed. And it is a bit young. Would not venture an opinion based on comb and waddles, but could it not easily be vent sexed at this point?

I never heard of vent sexing at 5 weeks old only at 1 day old.

I have sexed 5 weeks old with single comb pretty accurate at this point but when it comes to breeds with pea or rose comb do I have a lot harder time.

The Deathlayer breed is one of the rarest breeds in the world and nearly extinct. They come in 2 colors, silver and gold. There are more Silver Deathlayers as Gold Deathlayers. It is a very intersting breed. Their egg productions is supposed to stay up the same level until the day they die. Hence the name Deathlayer. This breed is over 400 years old from Germany and also called "Westfaellischer Totleger" or everyday layer.

Vent sexing has to be done right after hatch, and it should be done only by professionals to avoid injury or death to the chicks.

I'm familiar with Deathlayers. There are many related breeds with similar coloring in Germany, Holland, Belgium and surrounding areas, all thought to be descended from Fayoumi stock brought north from Egypt, crossed with local common fowl in the various countries. Campines are probably the best known. All are noted for their laying capabilities.

I want to get some Deathlayers myself, but prices are prohibitive at the moment.

I assumed they had at one time Fayoumi in. I had one Fayoumi hen and loved her. Deathlayers are an interesting breed for sure. We will see if they lay to the day they die and if they keep the production up.

Can we also get some full body pictures? I’ve been fooled by combs and wattles before and although it’s a little early for male specific feathering that’s been more reliable for me.
