I’m in no hurry but wanted to pick your brains about a few of mine. I ordered 11 in April 10 pullets and one cockerel and ended up with what i believe to be one mis-sexed cockerel so 9 pullets and one cockerel which I still consider to be great luck. Which one of these cockerels is nicer? I like the body shape on the larger darker one but I’m not sure if it’s correct for breed. I know the lacing on the lighter one is much less uniformed Also can anyone show me a photo of ideal lacing and tail shape?:) all pointers are greatly appreciated as I’m not ready to cough up the $50 dollars for the SOP book.

Thank you! Okay, so if i mixed both of their favorable qualities I’d have a really good bird. Lol! I got the flock for egg production with the benefit of being pretty but I would like to experiment getting closer to breed standard. Is it possible with inferior genetics?

I'm not an expert, but asked a similar question of the breeder I buy from. She sold me two Orpingtons she said had faults. She said keep the best quality from the pair, and breed those. You may get a good quality bird to show eventually or you may never get one. To me that says, alot of time and wasted effort. So they are just pretty flock hens and a Roo now. they will give me chicks which will replace my older hens and they will be pretty as well.
If it were me I would invest in reputable stock and go from there, it will save you time and alot of frustration in the long run
