I have a 4 year old golden comet hen that is normally very active and friendly. She runs to me and follows me around in the yard and keeps me company while doing my yardwork. During the past week after a couple of hours outside she's been wanting to go in her pen for awhile. I later let her out and she's fine. Yesterday (Sunday) she wasn't her usual perky self. She wasn't active. She would stand there and her eyes would slightly close like she was going to sleep and then she would jerk and wake up. She drank water, grabbed her treat but didn't eat it or her food. I felt her crop which seemed full but not hard. I massaged this area and after a few minutes she would drool. She also drooled whenever I picked her up and carried her. I love my little girl and want to help her. Can anyone please tell me what to do?

Sorry your hen isn't doing well.
Have you felt between her legs for fluid build up?
Have you gotten to her before she comes off the roost in the morning to check to see if her crop is empty?
My guess is that she has ascites and her digestive system isn't functioning correctly any longer because of the abdominal pressure. Golden Comets are very high production hybrids and that takes a toll on the body. I just lost a WLH with similar symptoms but I knew it was coming for many months.

Her crop felt like a balloon. I lightly massaged it yesterday and she would drool afterwards. This morning she got out of her house when I checked on her and followed me to get water. She drank a lot of water which I put electrolytes and probiotics in. I had to leave briefly but since I came back she's been laying down. She's not eating. If she does have fluid build up what do I do?
