Okay, they have made it to 5+ weeks and are thriving, 4 golden comet sex links. Truth is I only wanted 3 as we have small accommodations for this year, but it was suggested getting an extra "just in case". As it happens they have all made it so far.

They all were very close in size when they came home at 3 days, but between week 1 and 2 one of them quickly outpaced the others and has been noticeably larger. This one, called Charity though may be Charlie, also had dark feathers come in much quicker and more fully than the others did, so in general we have been suspicious this is a roo.

The comet roos are usually predominantly white with some red on their wings, at least according to most of the photos I can find. Because of that, the thought crossed my mind that maybe this wasn't a golden comet but something else like a RIR that ended up in the wrong box. As I haven't had any chicks for over 20 years I can safely say I dunno!

I know 5 weeks is early for a guessing game but thought I would post a few pics to get people's thoughts just for the fun of it. They all get a little crazy when I start pointing my phone camera at them (what is that all about?! lol) but these pics should give a good idea of the size difference and a good look at Charity.

We have also noticed that this one seems dominant...where she goes, the others follow almost automatically. Recently the chest bumping has begun between Charity and 2 of the girls, where Charity charges up or another charges up to her. I haven't seen it happen between the other 3 girls but only between the girls and Charity. Not sure what, if anything, that means. And Charity has charged me once or twice which has gotten her firmly shoved back!

I'll be sorry if it is a roo because I don't want one, and we will have to try to find it a new home....whereas if it is a hen and I need to reduce the numbers it will likely be a lot easier to find someone to take her.

Like I said, it may be a bit early to guess, but I hope some of you more experienced folks will give it a shot anyway! :)

Looks like a New Hampshire Red, probably male based on the combs and wattles, but I’d wait a few more weeks, definitely not a sexlinks/comet.

I just realized there is a forum specifically for these questions -- oops! I will use the report button and see if I can get someone to move this to the appropriate forum regarding gender and breeds. Thanks!

That's not a sexlink, it's a rainbow or calico or ranger... whatever name the hatchery that produced it gives their hybrid sustainable broiler chicks.
