Yesterday I adopted four hens in need of a new home, and among them is what appears to be a goldtop hen. She's a little smaller than the others as I'd expect (bluebell, warren and maybe-CLB).

But, she weighs 2kg! Which seems a bit large for what I understand is a bantam hybrid. I can't find any info on the net about typical weights though, these don't seem to be all that popular. Can anyone shed light? Is that a typical size? It just seems hefty for a bantam - my resident girls are all commercial LF hybrids and weight 2-2.5kg so it was a bit of a surprise when I popped her on the scales!

This is she...

A gold-top is a cross between a standard silkie (not usually bantam) cockerel and a light sussex hen. It's done to produce a bird that retains the silkie's mothering instincts but with a larger body-size to cover more eggs. It's normal for her to be of a reasonable size.

Ah ok, that's interesting. Any references I've found have stated bantams on both sides for the parents. That explains it, thank you!
