Hello, I just went out back to see why by Buff Orp was making a fuss- usually she's spotted the neighbor's cat and wants us to chase him away. Well Stella the Black Australope is gone. No trace. Daisy the BO was making a fuss and looking over the fence and the Ameracauna pullet we have was hiding in the kids playhouse. They were barely out 20 minutes, and there is no trace. :(

We lost a pullet about two months ago, also no trace, and a crying partner pullet. We assumed it was a hawk as there was no trace and she was small still. But I didn't think a hawk would take a full grown hen. And they were supposedly under cover of a few apple trees, at least that is where my Buff Orp was.

Any ideas what I am dealing with and what to do? Chickens live in a very nice run all day, and usually come out to free range when we get home from work for a few hours in the late afternoon early evening. We live in a semi rural area in Northern California.

Coyote, fox, bobcat - all snatch/grab/flee predators. It will be back. Supervised free ranging (best with a shotgun) would be a good idea from now on.

It was a cat. We found her cornered in the blackberry bushes with a large cat trying to get to her. Pretty beat up too.
