I have posted this on a couple of other Group sites and have gotten a lot of good feedback but realized that I didn't post it here and am interested to hear what y'all have to say. So please see the below. Also, could somebody email me and let me know an easy way to get replies to my post. It doesn't look like I can have them sent to my email and with 7000 members, I have no idea how far back I'll have to scroll to find my original post. Is there another/easier way?
Well folks, it's time for me to take the next big plunge and buy an incubator. Just as when I started out in the Fancier game and knew next to nothing about poultry, I know next to nothing about "bators" now.
I have so much to think about now. I do know that I'm not gonna spend $3000 or anywhere's close to that - I'm guessing $500 will be a stretch and I'll probably try to get a used one if I can. I guess I can put it this way, I wanna get the best that I can for what I need that will last me for a long time. Not looking to get a junker to drive just to get me to work until I can buy something better but not looking to get a Mercedes either - now or in the future. Hope that helps. Buying used don't bother me at all as long as it meets the
above criteria.
I have decided that I'll pay for the automatic turner and have come to understand that I need to pay careful attention to the temperature AND the humidity so I probably need to get one that shows both. And it looks like I should get a fan to serve as forced air vice a still air bator.
I've taken a quick look at many of the models and makes that folks have recommended. I do like the Brinsea as it looks to be pretty modernized with the digital controls and all but I'd be interested in hearing how much difference y'all think there is in that.
Now I have two more questions. First, and this may be a real stupid one but what's the difference between a "Hatcher Unit" and an "Incubator"? (See www.dickeyincubators.com and www.cutlersupply.com ) Please don't tell me I gotta buy a separate device just to hatch my incubated eggs in!
Next question... I'm planning two have anywhere's from 4-8 Ameraucana hens that I will be wanting to hatch eggs from as well as 4-6 Welsummers. Plus I may be hatching 12-18 duck eggs and probably 4-6 goose eggs too. Do I need something like the Sportsman that's gonna hold 60 eggs or more?
My mind is spinning and I can't think of anything else right now. Once again, I appreciate all the help and look forward to hearing more from y'all. Who's willing to educate an Ignoramus like me on the do's and don't of what to look for in an incubator? Any and all information, advice, suggestions and/or recommendations are most appreciated!
