Hi Brandy, and
welcome-byc.gif
!

Glad you joined our community! My first suggestion is to check out BYC's great learning center: Learning Center Articles It has lots of information on keeping chickens and should be very helpful for new chicken owners.

Some good breeds include Wyandottes (my personal favorite), Black Sex-Links, Red Sex-Links, Orpingtons, Australorps, and Easter Eggers. They all lay well and have docile temperaments.

Good luck with your future poultry adventures!

Glad you have joined us.

I have Buff Orpintons and Barred Rocks and they are such sweeties. They can get noisy when they announce their eggs, but it's a wonderful sound.

I would suggest getting them from a breeder or hatchery that does gender sexing. Make sure to avoid any straight run chicks - you could get all roosters.

Plan on 4, but do plan and build the coop & run a little larger than you think, full sized chickens, especially BO, do get large.

Explore the learning center articles and coop forums.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Welcome to BYC, Brandy. Glad you decided join our flock. Breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) include Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Silkies, Sussex, and Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Nice to meet you Brandy, Welcome to the Back Yard chickens flock. If you want a great pet breed, not a great layer - try Silkies. They are one of the best natural incubators. They go broody fairly often and when they are you could swap our their eggs for fertile eggs from breeds you would like to have. A broody will hatch them and raise them as their own. Also silkies may great house pet chickens.

For great, gentle egg layers Black australorps are recommended often, people also like Buff Orpingtons. Sex links are bred for high egg production but, they burn out early, and tend to have serious reproductive issues later on. Man can only tamper so much - it's always a give and take situation.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I would recommend buff orpingtons. They are super friendly and affectionate. They lay large, brown eggs nearly every day. They are cold hardy and do very well in confinement. They are a great family breed and I think you will really enjoy them!
