My daughter can do 4H in 2014 but I want to get her chicks for her 5th birthday next year. Im thinking silkies and polish we do have very cold winters but planning on insulated coop just for them since my hens are LF breeds. I know silkies are really good kid breed but what about polish? im the one who wants polish since I think they are the coolest looking chicken ever. my other question is should we buy eggs to hatch from a show breeder or will hatchery chicks be fine for 4H? If get eggs I will try to have them hatch on her birthday or day old chicks be delivered around her birthday.

I don't know if all 4h shows are the same but from my knowledge the judge scores you on how well you handle your bird and how much you know about your bird. They also score on how nice your bird looks but they weren't basing each kids bird off of the standard. For example a production red won 1st in one of the catagories. So overall if you want to go with a show breeder you can but its not completely necesary.
