My name is Stephanie. I've been lurking around for awhile but I've finally decided to make an account.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I'm kinda new. I know we had a few chickens in one of the houses I lived at when I was a child but I don't remember much and we only lived there for 9 months (we called it the snake house so you might be able to guess why we moved)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Zero, but the coop is supposed to arrive today. So maybe I'll have the pullets by this time tomorrow.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I plan on getting one Welsummer, one Wyandotte, and one Easter Egger/ Olive Egger/Lakeshore Egger(depends on what they have)

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google search five years ago(we had just bought our house) to find out if chickens were legal in Arlington Texas.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to read, garden, knit, cook and travel.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
This is a very exciting year for us. My brother and his wife are having a baby due in late July (Riley Charlotte) who will be the first grandchild for my parents and the first girl on her side. I just got a pug puppy in April (our last pug died in November of last year and our Chihuahua was getting lonely plus we were ready). My mother works as a medical assistant at a dermatologist in rural area and some of the patients kept bringing her eggs because they have so many. She asked them about raising chickens and a week and a half later here I am! My father is a truck driver who is on the road a lot so my mother here lonely and was looking for a good project. I'm a machinist who works the night shift on weekends and goes to school during the week. My sister, Carolyn, is a nurse and her fiance, John, is a mechanic/construction worker. My brother, Jose, is a mechanical engineer and his wife, Leeana, is a teacher. Among us we have several fur babies; my black pug, Wasabi and our Chihuahua, Antigen, my sister's cat, Norma, pitbulls, Santo and Mari, my brother's English bulldog, Winston, and beagle, Spot.

We are kind of the guinea pigs when it comes to chickens. My siblings are interested but they want to see how we do before getting their own.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

Hi Stephanie! :frow
Welcome!
A word of advice to be extremely cautious with your dogs around chicks/chickens.
Many people have never seen their dogs exhibit predatory behavior (especially small dogs) and assume they never will only to tragically end up with dead birds.
Also, while some dogs won’t stalk or attack chickens they often get very excited by them and like to chase them and end up “playing” with them to death.
I have read many sad tales on this forum about dogs breaking into brooders and killing the chicks and getting into runs or coops also.

Sorry for writing so much but it’s a subject people sometimes overlook in the excitement of getting their first chicks.
Enjoy your new babies! :ya:wee

Thanks for the heads up! Luckily it's just the pug and the Chihuahua at home but even so we plan on blocking off half the backyard with hardware cloth to give the chickens their own space. I'm not going to let them be together because I don't know who would win! I also don't want the chickens to possibly blind my dog .
