In the Brooder
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yup, a total neophyte!/ Last July.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Three. One roo and two hens.
(3) What breeds do you have? The roo is a barred rock. The hens are purported to be black star, but I don't think they are.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I did a web search for information on chickens.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Cooking, taking care of anything that breathes, gardening and canning, reading in my (cough, cough) spare time, helping my husband with projects, whatever seems interesting!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am an almost old (58) woman with an officially old (62) husband. We currently live in south central PA but will be moving to the eastern shore of Virginia later this year. We recently sold our cabinetry business and are semi-retired. We have a dorky Great Dane-Dugan, a fat old boycat-Pork, a skinny tiny girlcat-Puddintane, a rooster-Buckaroo, and two hens-Maude and Emma. All but the Great Dane and husband are rescues.
I am an accidental chicken owner. It all started when at a family gathering this beautiful rooster showed up (see avatar). The neighbor's dogs would have killed him so we cornered and captured the roo and I took him home. He was quite comfortable in the fenced in yard, and Dugan didn't mind sharing his roofed in kennel, even going so far as to share his dog treats with the newcomer. After a week of searching we found his owner. It appears that the roo was being kept with his 2 brothers on a farm well over two miles away. The other roos were beating him up so he ran away from home. He traveled over TWO MILES, through woods and fields known to be populated with coyote, fox, and bear!!! Well, I returned said rooster to his owner, but decided I would check back in a week to see how he was. Well, he was a mess! Pecked ragged, his wattles torn and chunks out of them, thin. . .I brought him home, thank you very much!
So, I didn't KNOW, honestly, that chickens had such amazing personalities. That silly rooster captured my heart the first week, and cemented it by the end of the second week. Crazy thing follows me everywhere, sits on the back porch railing and crows til I come out and hold him, will sit in my lap for hours, and talks to me non-stop! Okay, so he was pretty young when I got him, no spurs at that time. Now he is fully mature and I decided it was time to get him some companions, so we rescued 2 little year old chickens from a guy who had too many. (30 birds in a 6-bird coop!) They are loving life, we are loving them, I just hope they will tolerate the move to Virginia. The girls are very wary of people, are tolerating the other critters, and have learned to be hens while Buckaroo has learned to be a rooster, quite well, too!
Okay, so now you know that I am new, and a long-winded gas bag! Hi, hail and well met! Love the site, the information, and everyone's obvious love and respect for these amazing birds.
