Im new to the Chicken world and would like to get some chickens for my kids and family to raise. We would like some friendly good egg laying chickens. I would like to try and hatch them ourselves as my kids would love it. If possible I would like to get a few different breeds.

Any suggested breeds?
We live in Birmingham. Any suggested locations for purchasing fertile eggs?

thanks for your help,
Andrew

Black Australorps! They are friendly and good egglayers.

Also Buff Orpingtons (these can decrease their laying somewhat from my experience but they are so nice to have a couple at least around for their personalities in my opinion).

Easter Eggers! Shy, timid, a bit flighty (runs away) but oh so sweet and lays those colorful eggs.

Silkies...get two for fun...they won't give you many eggs though. They can't fly and will likely not go up ramps...also not want to roost sometimes. But they are just adorable.

Cochins- bantam ones are so friendly but go broody a lot like silkies, so just one or two for fun! They are so gentle (the hens) from my experience.

Good chickens for kids: cochins, silkies, - this is repeated often!!

For your heavy-duty egglaying though I'd get some Golden Sex Links (also called Red Stars, or Cinnamon Queen, or Golden Comet). They are GREAT egglayers. But they can be a bit aggressive to your other chickens so if you get them, I'd get them at the same time as your other ones so they all grow up together. Then you have the best chance at not having bullying. Just my opinion.
