Caught a first glimpse of a 6 foot long black snake at the coop today. Now my question is, how do I get rid of it WITHOUT harming my chooks?

I cant do moth balls, because they will eat them!!! Any suggestions?

Not being a venomous species, I think I would grab it by the tail and drop it into a pillowcase. After releasing it nearby, go to work snakeproofing the coop. Also work to make sure chicken food is not available to rodents throughout the night.

Be very careful grabbing a black snake by the tail!! The ones around here are very aggressive. My husband was bit by one just the other day. We have had 3 of them in our coop in the last 2 weeks.

Yeah, that one is pretty effective. Messy, but effective.

My co-op sells a bottle of snake repellent. Supposedly the smell drives them off. I got a bottle yesterday after finding my first snake skin next to the coop. I think the little sucker is living under the coop as the barn cats keep lying in wait and staring hard under the coop. I'll let you know if the stuff works.

The husband of a friend of mine was cutting the grass and a snake hopped up on the riding mower with him! ACK!!! He kicked it off and then drove zigzags and circles around the yard trying to kill it. I likely would have just dropped dead of a heart attack right then and there. My friend happened to be at the window watching all this. She couldn't figure out why the normal grass cutting had turned into an artistic free form event...
