I want quail. They are cute and I want to sell some pickled eggs at the market.
I found this on my local CL. It's 50$. Used though. Is it safe to use a used coop for quail?
It housed chickens. Also, the pen would be in the same yard as chickens. I know there is a debate about the two species sharing space, but the yard is huge and the quail would only be in this coop.
Thoughts? Opinions?

Ok. Thanks! If I do get it, I'll try to put a door on the "run" part of it. Now, the only door is the one on the shelter.
Plus some little touch ups here and there...

Quick question- would they use the shelter? It's iff the ground, I can add a ramp if that'll help. Do they roost at night?

Mine use a ramp quite happily.

Ensure the ramp has a nice rough surface so they get a grip. Try to keep the angle low, not steep or they don't like it.

My coturnix will not use the second floor of anything. I've tried to lure them with food to an elevated area and it was a no go.
My bobs have a second floor with a ramp and they go up there sometimes. But as far as shelter this winter when it was below freezing they were all huddled on the floor. Go figure

Lol if I get it, perhaps I can make the shelter a little easier to get into. I'm just cautious because it's made of porous wood, not hard wood. And already two years old. I don't want it to go to poo on me in only a year or so. Then is be back to square one.
But it's close enough that I can atleast go look at it.
Do y'all think it'll be ok if the enclosure shares the yard with the chickens?

My quail love using the ramp and will go up and down on our chicken coop all day long. Your second story is a bit higher than mine, though. They also will stand on top of the shoebox shelters I put in their coop.

My ramp has roofing on it to make it scratchy enough that they can get up and down.

it really depends. some love it and sleep in the house, while some hate it. they are by definition ground birds so you shouldn't be surprised if they dont go up. and it needs to be kept locked up. chickens and quail can't mingle as the chickens usually pick on the quail or they get crushed. hope this helps
