I did my fair share of searching on Amazon and saw so many chicken heated water items that were pretty pricey, and didn't really have the best reviews. But soon I found a water bowl with great reviews from chicken owners and it was a much lower price than official chicken products. So this product isn't really meant for chickens but lots of people use it for them, and for my 7 pullets and 1 cockerel, it works great. So far I know it works in 2F weather and most likely can go lower, since it still works great. The cord is meant to withstand dog and cat jaws and has worked good for my flock, but then again I pushed the cord through the ventilation hole to plug it in, so not much is actually IN the coop. Saying this I'd also like to mention it doesn't have a super long cord and you WILL need an extension cord unless you have an outlet in your coop or something very close. I pushed our moveable coop closer to the house for this reason but also the new position helps with the weather and safety of the flock. Now the bowl doesn't make the water warm but doesn't let it freeze. It will only heat up if the water gets below freezing. I can never feel it get warm so it's not meant to help HEAT your coop either, and also this is good because it means it's not going to overheat and burn down the coop. Most people said it lasts a little over 2 years in the reviews, and I can't prove this since I've only had it since the beginning of this winter, but nothing has gone wrong and my flock is happy! Now, this product is a 1 1/2 gallon but really holds 1 gallon. If your flock is smaller than 6, I'd go with their smaller model but I can't review that so I can't really recommend it.
I wish all of your flocks luck for a successful winter!
