My first post here on this forum... where do I begin. Well, my chicks are 3 and half weeks old. First new batch of chicks since I was 10 years old; I am now 31. We have 3 weeks to build the coop - have not nailed two boards together yet. We have the chicken wire, some scrap wood, nails, pine shavings, the hanging water feeder and supplies to build a food feeder. We live in an area that can get to 15 below in the winter. Usually we get a few nights that dip that low. For the most part its 20's and 30's. I don't know if I will be able to sleep at night thinking about them out there. We plan to insulate the floor and the roof. The side walls, I have read, is good to leave non-insulated to allow some fresh air to seep through. Sounds cold to me!! If anyone has any pointers for me, I am all ears. Happy Easter!

Thanks Everyone! Glad to be part of a forum of folks who know their stuff! One other question then, for now, please: How many weeks old until I should put them in their coop? I have read 4, 5 or 6 weeks old, but 4 weeks is just in a few days here! I'm thinking I would LOVE to have them out their at 5 weeks, but we do get some pretty cold nights in May still. We are in Central Oregon. ~ Grace

Thank You! Very helpful, and mostly relieving! We live in central oregon and I grew up raising chicks in southern sunny california. This is a whole new world for me! How old do you think I can put them into their coop at? I'm thinking 5 weeks... ~ Grace
