I figured I would finally stop lurking on the BYC page and join.
I grew up in the woods and have always been fascinated with raising animals, although I never had the opportunity to. My husband and I finally bought our first home 4 years ago, but chickens weren't allowed. 2 years ago, we moved here, to SW Michigan, and purchased a home in the woods. I started my research of everything chicken and when an old friend offered to hatch me some eggs, I said yes.
So then I had a few months to prep a brooder in the garage, and a smaller temp coop (that is now my medical/isolation/broody pen), and finally to build our permanent coop and run. Which I love and the girls love, and I could not have done it without my amazing husband and all the great advice here! So, thank you and I hope to keep learning here.
Out of 20 eggs my friend incubated, 7 hatched. I took them all and one failed to thrive and passed the next day. I think of that chick often. We call him 7 and he was probably my rooster. All the other chicks grew into hens. My birds are backyard mix, but I have what appear to look like 2 Wyandottes, 2 EEs, 1 RIR, and 1 adorable (and currently broody) Old English Game bantam.
I currently am hatching two bantam eggs under my broody, who is set up in the temp coop so she can rest and focus on mama-ing. I'm 5 days in on that adventure and we'll see what happens!
Also present at my home: 1 hubby, 1 teenager, 2 indoor cats, 2 outdoor wild cats, 1 neighbor's wandering dog, 2 hawks, a bazillion racoon, lots of coyotes, owls who are not nocturnal, fox, deer, 1 possum, wild turkey, lots of birds!
