We've lived on this 5 acres for 22 years now and I've finally gotten around to building a chicken coop & run. I bought 12 baby chix on March 3rd - six RIR and six Barred Rock. They're all doing great! I kept them in the basement until yesterday when I moved them into the coop. It took maybe an hour before they started to emerge from the coop and checked out the run. Btw, I got them for the eggs, not meat. I have a fenced area about 5000 s.f. adjacent to the run that I'll let them free range in once they're bigger. Anyway, I've got lots of questions and look forward to advice from experienced members.
Do you typically have water & feed inside the coop as well as in the run? What's your favorite watering device? I have pine shavings on the floor of the coop and the chix will invariably kick shavings into the water. I'm a little concerned about the floor of the coop staying wet around the waterer, even though I put linoleum down. I'll try to post some pix of my operation. Feel free to critique and offer advice!
