Welcome to the world of keeping chickens! I just started three months ago myself. I started with 17-week old chickens I got from a nearby farm - found them on Craigs List. As others have said - have a coop and make sure it is secure from predators. If you start with chicks, you'll need a brooder for the first few weeks. I got my first chicks this week. Typically, once you get a few chickens, you'll want to get more.
