good treat?

What is a good treat for my Buff Orpingtons, other than dandelions?

Chickens are a Nobel beast.... They are like Pigs with wings and feathers. They love to eat.... Greens. They love Chard, Collards, pea shoots.... Plant a bunch of sugar pea pods and you'll have a massive about of beautiful greens. My Buffs go crazy over dried meal worms. They love dry bread. Cabbage.... Anything... Hang a cabbage on a string in their run, they will go crazy. Chickens seem to be very much like people, they love a variety of snack items.

And second... Worms (both the garden variety and mealworms bought at either a pet store or dried), clover, plain yogurt (beware this will be messy!), strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, are all great treats. There is actually a list on here if you search "chicken treats" of safe foods to feed your chickens.

I wanted to do something with crummies in the bottom of the empty pellet bag mixed with some DE. Decided to mix it with yogurt. Had to feed it to the girls off the end of my finger for them to get the idea. Fed it to them in the middle of the lawn, someone said it was messy.

Those are some beautiful ladies... Chickens have so much character.... They are a Nobel Bird!

Well our chickens have alot of favorite treats like.....

1. grasshoppers and grubs seasonally of course

2. mealy worms especially in the winter when you have to get them at a bait shop

3. sunflower hearts

4. table scraps like spaghetti noodles and such , you have to be careful not to include too much salt

5. cooked rice but don't overdo it , it will soften shells

6. eggs and eggshells. We cook them up so they don't get used to eating raw eggs

7. chicken scratch

8. string cheese just don't overdo it, it contains salt BUT they will jump to get some

9. watermelon. especially in hot weather actually melon fruit or rind

10. fresh sweet corn straight from the garden its how we get rid of small ears that aren't worth saving
