This is my first time raising chickens and I am loving it but don't really understand their temperaments.

We purchased 9 hens a day old (ended up with 8 and one rooster) that was suppose to be a hen :)

They are now 4 months old.

We got a rooster from a friend (didn't realize we had one already).

It was good for about 2 months, then it started being extremely mean to the hens. We went to the coop yesterday to find the big rooster pecked our little rooster to death. (The mean rooster was mighty tasty last night, tough, but tasty).

Today, one of the hens pecked me in the leg hard enough to leave a bruise. The largest of the bunch. The rest are very docile, even skittish. Except one, my "Flyer" who loves her head & breasts rubbed and comes running when I call her for me to pick her up.

We are in Florida, the past few days, we have noticed birds acting strangely more so than ever. Buzzards in the yard, crows flying around, Hawks on top of the shop, even the song birds coming up on the porch.

Not sure if that has anything to do with anything but could use some help. :)

Thank you all so much in advance.

Well that is one heck of a situation. First, sadly to say the rooster killing the other rooster was sooner or later going to happen. Both roosters want to be dominant and have the hens all to themselves. The strongest and most dominant rooster killed the smaller one. Now the wild birds being everywhere I am not sure about. Coincidence???

Sounds like a real-life remake of 'The Birds.' You know, critters are far more sensitive to atmospheric, magnetic, and electromagnetic changes than humans. If I were you, I'd make sure I had plenty of fresh water, food, and other supplies on hand. "Something" may be about to happen in Florida. Best of luck to you.

Thank you both for your reply!

Now, my "Flyer" who has loved me so much and begged me to pet & pick her up runs up to me and pecks me very hard. She drew blood 3 times today and I wasn't even trying to pet her. She literally chases me down to do this.

Very odd.

You may be right about Florida. I was born & raised here and strange things are happening, especially with the weather!

Thanks again all!
