Do geese harbor sperm for a period of time? My goose had a wild Canada mate for a few months this fall and winter. We found him dead a couple of weeks ago. Now my goose has laid 6 eggs. What are the odds that any of these eggs are fertile? I'm willing to let her sit on them so she goes through her hormonal cycle. And I'll be thrilled if she produces even one gosling. But how do I handle her when at the end of 30+ days if the eggs have not hatched? Appreciate any advice.

I’ve heard they can hold on to it for a number of weeks though I’m not positive.

Canada geese and domestic geese are different species, “Branta and Anser” they have been known to hybridize but the offspring are assumed to be sterile, I’ve never heard of a second generation hybrid between them so if you do get babies you most likely won’t have any more generations.

Thanks. We'll find out. Just have to wait.

My girl is a pied Cotton Patch goose the last of a small flock I had to re-home. I kept her because I was not sure how healthy she was, being the runt and the only pied gosling. But she has become a beautiful girl. I was tickled when 2 Canadas started hanging around our yard this summer and I encouraged them by giving them morning and evening treats when I cared for my own birds. Soon the female Canada disappeared and after a little while the male took up with my girl. I was so looking forward to their goslings and then he died. Just slumped over dead near the pond! My girl started laying eggs that week hence my question about harboring sperm. I discovered her on a nest of 5 eggs in front of the house. I put her up in a pen with them hoping she'd go broody. No joy. I searched for local goslings and have a bead on some Pilgrims nearby ready to hatch. I was hoping to take advantage of her maternal hormones but I think she has already slacked off on her egg laying. . . unless she has them cleverly hidden. But she is good natured and I have hopes that she will accept any goslings I get in the next couple of weeks.

If this was more recent i would have encouraged you to place the eggs in a incubator & to maybe look up how long embryos can survive if you still have them.. I think with chickens its 2 weeks .. But im no expert. Lol
Anyhow, im sorry things didn't work out. I was searching for canada goose eggs for 2 years and finally, i found 1 reputable breeder with permits & i scooped up a couple❤ om way too excited so i know the feeling lol. Shes done for this season but she may sell again next season. I hope things work out with the goslings. Hybrids are auch a joy & personally im OBSESSED with canada hybrids ever since i got my boy and been learning so much about them ❤ Good luck in the future.
