We have three 2/3-week old white Chinese goslings who have quickly stolen our hearts and become an integral part of our daily lives. Today we were out walking around (my 2 year old, 3 month old in the stroller, and I) and unbeknownst to me, the goslings had huddled under the stroller. Of course baby was crying, I was distracted and doing a million things at once as every parent always is. Before I knew it, I saw one of them flop/trip and knew something terrible had happened. I picked him up and his poor little toe was very clearly broken/had been run over with the stroller wheel. I can’t tell if it’s just the one or if one of the others is also broken. He does still try to stand and hobble but there is clear swelling beginning. I just feel sick. What can I do here? I will try to splint but should I wait until 24-48 hours when the swelling reduces some? Have I just robbed this sweet baby of any future quality of life? I feel so awful 😭 Thank you for any guidance. I will upload a picture as soon as I can get back out and take one here in the next hour.

Poor sweetie. I’ve splinted one of my chicken’s feet before for curly toe paralysis and did something kind of similar for this baby with a cardboard base with a cotton square between the foot and the cardboard, some sensitive tape spreading the foot into proper alignment and adhering it to the cardboard, then some vet wrap/Conan up around the leg some. He’s having a hard time walking with this as it’s kind of cumbersome but the foot is staying in good alignment…the leg however seems to be splaying outward now 😩 what should I do?

It dose look bruised and swollen so may want to uses some ice to get the swelling down. I would encourage him to not move around allot if you can.

Had a gosling who got a broken leg. Put her in a brooder box next to the other goslings she was happy to lay still. Floated her in the bathroom sink about 4 times a day. she was all healed in about 2 weeks and stopped limping about a week after that. the young ones grow bones fast and heal fast.

I had a yearling get her toes broke and it took a while I kept her quiet in small pen with thick wood shavings for a soft bed and then put here in a water trough with water for a few floats every day took her about 4 weeks to even want to walk.

Thank you so much for this! I did get him isolated a bit to where he’s able to lay and doesn’t have to move much to eat or drink. I was so excited this morning to see he was bearing weight and a ton of the swelling had subsided! I now we still have a long road to go but even a little bit of improvement was such a great feeling. Thanks so much for the reply, it makes me hopeful!!
