Got a question for you PeepsCA about paints and pieds

I bought some eggs late last season from a young women that had a paint male in with her colored hens. All I got were the classic pied pearls out of those eggs. Do you think I'll get the paints if I breed those birds together ? Are my chances pretty good ?

You mean Pintos? There are no Paint Guineas.

I have no personal experience with breeding Pintos, and they are fairly new so I haven't seen any info on them. As far as I know a Pinto Guinea is just an extra heavily Pied Pearl Grey Guinea, where the breeder has most likely bred their more heavily Pied birds together generation after generation to increase the amount of Pied (white) on the offspring. (I don't think that Pinto is a separate gene all in it's own, but I may be wrong). My guess is that only having one Pinto male in the breeding mix only gives one copy of the Pied (or possibly Pinto) gene to the keets, and that male only produced classic Pied Pearl Grey keets in your hatch because that's the base color of the Pinto (and Pearl Grey is dominant in both color and pearling). A friend of mine got the same outcome from eggs that came from a BYC'rs flock with 1 male Pinto covering assorted non-Pied Hens. To reproduce Pintos I believe you need a male/female pair, and then half the keets will be Pintos, half will be pure White. You may be able to produce Pintos with a Pinto and a Pied breeding, but I don't think that 2 of the classic Pieds you hatched will produce Pinto keets. Not positive tho. The Guinea Farm breeds and sells Pinto Keets, you may be able to get more info from them about how the genes work.

Sorry I don't have better info for you. Pinto's just not a variety I have wandered into, yet...
