I was subpoenaed last year to testify in court that was a 2 hour drive for me each way to drive... the case went for 2 days and I was paid a total of $80 for the trip. Because I have friends in the area i just crashed at her place for the night but if I had to drive back and forth both days I would have been left in the negative, gas for my van was $40 alone per 1 round trip + food (lunch) they could care less if i missed 2 days of work. I would have lost over $160 bucks in lost wages for per day but i was able to reschedule my days and used the 2 days as my weekend
you may want to call the Victim/witness Assistance program (thats what we call it here) I am sure there is a similar office in USA courts or the DA's office and find out what the allowance is per night for a hotel, or if they have preferred rates at a local hotel. When I was in court I was just on the inside of the boundary of getting a hotel room, I was 20KMS short so if i lived in the next town i could have been entitled to a hotel room
