I picked up this today

http://public.fotki.com/TeresaMc/chickens/doghouse.html (I can't get the "Img" tag to work!)

It's 51" square and 67" tall. I got it free on craigslist. It turned out to be better than I expected because it's wired for electricity, has a lamp inside, is and is insulated! It's also so heavy it took 4 men to put it in my truck... now I'm home with my one man. It's still in my truck.

But once I solve that problem, how should I modify the inside? Right now it's just a big empty box for a dog. I'm going to do something in the back to make it easy to remove the eggs. Maybe just remove the back completely and then put it on hinges. Who knows? Not me, because it's still on my truck!

But I see some people have nesting boxes and some people use perches. When I had chickens before, we just had a shelf with straw on it. I want them to lay their eggs in an elevated place so I don't have to get down on the ground to find them (I'm old.) So what is better; a perch, a shelf, or boxes?

Also, I remember we used something like this: http://www.westernranchsupply.com/blowup.php3?item_id=1533 to feed them. Of course I wouldn't need one so big for my flock of 3, but I would like something that wouldn't need filled every day. I also would like it to be outside instead of in the dog house. To do that, would I cover part of the run to keep the rain out of it? I don't remember what we did before.

They need both a roost and nest box, not one or the other. They lay in the box, and sleep up on the roost.

Off to a good start there!
