So my grandmother who really means well heard I have a small flock of chickens and thought it would be nice to bring me another one, so she went out to a local chicken farm and bought me a black and white chick with a black Poof on its head. My other chickens are all 15 weeks old, and this chick is about a month to a month and a half old, I have heard you cannot mix chicks with grown chickens, so I have put it in the brooder by itself. But I wasn't sure if it would survive on its own. I have a female buff orpington who is very gentle and good natured. I have read that they tend to be broody. My question is will the chick survive on its own, and if not should I put the female buff in the brooder with it. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think I would try the buff orpington with it. In about a week or two I'd try adding it to the flock. Thank Grandma for her kindness and thoughtfulness even though the timing wasn't very good.

The chick will survive, but will grow up to be " off " It won't get along with the other chickens, and will either get picked on, or be the picker. I would try to put the BO with it, and if that doesn't work, get it a chick it's own age. Keep it inside until it's over 8 weeks before you put it with the whole group.

Should there be certain behaviors to look for when introducing the Buff to the chick to see if she is going to be aggressive or accepting toward the chick?

The chick wouldn't be too happy by itself considering they are sociable creatures and depending if you have room for more add a few more chicks or yes try the BO. Look for excessive pecking and loss of feathers or perhaps they will get along right away.
