Hi I have read other postings about grass clippings. I wanted to know if drying them out is what most people do. We would like to put some in the coop as well as the run, but didn't want to make a sauna in there! We have had a few 100+ days. Then are they ok to use for fertilizer or do they need to be composted first. any help is so appreciated!

They will love fresh green gras clippings.

Once the grass dries out it will be like a orchard grass type hay. You can use it for bedding.

you want to dry it out and as a fertilizer you will want to compost it first. Chicken manure is what we like to call hot. It can be used as a direct fertilizer but you have to lime the heck out of it first or it will kill or "burn"your plants or whatever you want to fertilize.

thanks for the answers! We are so excited to use our grass clippings for something, other than trash. Our pen is just packed dirt at this time, so to keep it clean we are putting down shavings. I think grass clippings will cool it down a little for them, and keep it clean. Our next project will be to put in som sod. We have some less than beautiful spots in our yard, so we are going to cut them out (like the movie fun with dick and jane) and put new sod, and send some of the less beautiful to the girls until it needs to be changed out again!Chickens are so useful

Are you asking for grass clipping for them to munch out on or for compost ?

I grandkids pull grass along the edge of the run area and throw the grass to the chickens and they GO CRAZY .......

My biggest problem is its been raining everyday and can not dry out the run area . Was going to put sand in there , BUT want it to kinda dry up 1st. before dumping sand and just adding problems ...

and naturally when its WET , then the flies are going nuts in thereand there is smell . We dusted heavy this morning with what we found at feedstore called Sweet PDZ , and is suppose to be really good for odor .... ANYBODY every use this stuff .

We know they will pick through it, but we have a lot of clippings, there is bound to be something left to compost with after they are through.
Yes, we are planning on replenishing the sod on a regular basis. We are taking out the stuff that everyone refers to as "orchard grass" and putting it in the pen for them to pick around in and ruin. we will put the new stuff out in the yard, and rotate around until who knows, maybe our grass will be great, and the chickies will be happy!
