My chickens have cleared all the grass from their run area and now have bare sand. I saw one of them sticking his head out thru the wired to get at the green tall grass on the other side. Can I put my lawn cuttings in their pen for them?

My thoughts on this are that the birds can have all of the grass they wish, if and only if they pick it from the blade themselves. Feeding cut grass to chickens can lead to some bad crop conditions. Cut grass, will be eaten whole blades at a time and they are so easy to get that the birds will fill up on them and develop sour crop. Along with grass I would provide grit, if you are not doing so at this time.

Search for sour crop or other such here on BYC for the details.

Best to you and your birds,

RJ

So i stopped using scotts fertilizer for my lawn so the chickens would be safe. Now my yard is looking horrible with the organic fert.. Any suggestions for weed control?
