Gray chick? Not blue....what is it?

I would assume "white chicks" are still splash but with a very limited number of....splashes. Like..1. They didn't really get splashed they just got a drop of overspray, right? ha ha ha

The "gray chick" is definitely splash...hard to tell in pics, but some of the newer feathers still partially covered by the baby fuzz have blue instead of "white".

But what the heck is the blue one? He really doesn't look anything like my last cochin chicks. Just totally shaped differently and everything.

Yes, this one had some pretty feathered legs! I ordered several cochins and two of mine seemed to feather up a lot faster than the others. In fact, one of them is totally covered with feathers now at just over a month old and the others still have some of their baby down. I guess the growth & maturation rate can vary from chick to chick. I don't even think it matters if they are male or female because one of mine that feathered quickly is definitely a roo & the other appears to be a pullet so far.

There are other types of chicks with feathered legs, so maybe it's not a Cochin at all.

4 toes. I counted in the store (it was in the same bin as the silkies) and recounted when I got home and have recounted a couple times a day since then. THERE MUST BE A TOE HIDING SOMEWHERE.

I'm really curious to see what it grows up to be.

I recently got some Silkies from a hatchery and a couple only had 4 toes. I asked about it on this forum because they were otherwise just like the other silkies. They were, but just not show quality.

Does your chick have black skin? If not, it's not a silkie.

Nope, pinkish skin. Maybe it'll just be a really bad quality cochin.

My other cochins are awesome. They ended up with 3 black, 2 a blue barred/cuckoo, and 1 a blue something.....The blue might just be really bad quality blue barred, but they are neat either way.

Now I just need a regular blue to round out the cochins.....and a white, and a barred and a buff and a........It'll be a rainbow in the cochin pen (guess I need to build a cochin pen now).

I love Cochins! I have several, but all of mine are bantams except one. I started out with a variety of chickens because I did not know what type I would like. My Cochins and Easter Eggers are my favorites! My chickens are pets only and these 2 types seem to be the calmest and best pet chickens that I have.

If you love them for pets, who cares if they are show quality. They are pretty!

Here we are at 3-4 weeks. Is this a splash? She seems more of a shimmery silvery gray than anything else. It darkens up to her head.

You can just see the tip of her head in this one.

Is that splash? She is definitely an andalusian like the others. Leaning towards girl as there is one who is very obviously a boy. I ended up with 3 blue, 1 "splash" and 1 black, all andalusians. Nice little group.
