Great charity-- give chicks for Christmas!

I love Heifer! It is a smart and sustainable model. Receipient families get animals matched to their living conditions, as well as the opportunity to BE a donor. They have to promise to give away some of the offspring from the gift.

It is really a wake-up call to realize that the gift of a dozen chickens or a few rabbits can DOUBLE a family's income!!!! We are all truly fortunate, here on BYC.

My kids' school participates in this every year. They raise funds based on how much reading the kids do. My son's class donated a hive of bees. My daughter's class donated a goat.

I was going to donate to them last year, but upon doing a bunch of research, I changed my mind.

I give microloans through Kiva instead. When the loan is paid off, I can reloan that money to someone else. That way the same money can benefit more people.

My hubby and I make a donation to Heifer every year instead of buying each other Christmas gifts.

The one thing I like most about this organization is that they do not fill your mailbox with junkmail and pleas for more money.

We donated to the ASPCA last year, and they have probably spent all the money we gave them on more adverts, which they promptly sent to our house.

Hehe! I bet that makes for an interesting conversation.

My dad's birthday is coming up....think I'll give him a goat, and then give flocks of chicks to people for Christmas

Yep, I'm planning to do that as well. I'll give people animal donations as gifts, and then do the Kiva thing for my own happiness....after recovering financially from Christmas.

Sounds like a great idea. I do have to wonder what these needy families do about feed though.

DH was telling me about this just the other day. What a great idea!! For us, I think this one falls under general donations while Heifer is great for gift giving.

I like the ASPCA as well.

I give Kiva gift certificates. Then the recipient can choose to relend the money or pull it out to do with it as he/she wishes. It's like the energizer bunny gift - it keeps on giving and giving and giving.
