great chicken stories PLEASE READ

OK this is a thread for all of your funny or touching chicken stories. I have quite a few and I'm sure others do to. I'll start.

Gypsy King's acceptance
My hamburg rooster ,Gypsy King, was in a pen I made for my sumatras. He was in there because he was smaller than all the other chickens and was being picked on by the younger roosters. He had a harem of 4 Plymouth rocks. When I put the rocks in for the night he wasn't there, panicking, I looked everywhere for him. Giving up I went to check on the broody hen named Big Momma

. She had been nesting in the goat shed for the past few night with her brood. But what I saw surprised me. Gypsy King was under Big Momma! He had booted all of the chicks out and they were nestled next to their mom. He did that for the next few nights until I fixed where he was getting out of and now he sleeps with his harem.

Big Momma is now sleeping in the coop with her brood. I have just introduced some older chicks into the flock. Most of them did not like it and tried to escape (many succeeded) but when I put the in the coop they stayed in. But when my mom put them in for the night (my toe was busted and was poen and raw and I didn't want it to get infected) she only saw 2 of the older chicks in the coop, but you'll never guess where they were. They were under Big Momma! So my mom went out to get the rest of them and as soon as they went in they all huddled under her. So now our broody hen has 3 sizes of chicks

Here's mine for today:

I have 2 crooked beak chickens, my 12wk EE hen is affectionately known as Crook and the small red laced cornish bantam pullet is Crook2. Anyway, they are ALWAYS underfoot waiting for their special blended chicken mash-soup. Well, Crook decided she was hungry and hot enough to get INTO the water spray while I was mixing her food. She gave me quite the look and wet me just as much as she wetted herself

Needless to say, her head and beak was ACTUALLY clean for about oh.....3 seconds today

I once found under a board a young chicken who only had one leg. There were no signs of wounds. I named it Unipod. She got along fine in life untill she dissapeared.

I know, it's a short story... oh well.

How about a chicken and dog story...??...

The other day I had let the chickens out in the evening as usual into the larger fenced in back yard. We have a great pyr pup about 12 weeks old, and although she hasn't shown any aggression towards the chickens, I don't trust her yet to have her out there without human supervision with the chickens loose.

Long story short, I realized that the kids had let her out - she'd been out in the yard at least 10 min or more when I found out. Went out there to get the pup and she's laying in the yard....chewing....on.....something....

Please, oh PLEASE let that be an old shoe, or SOMETHING other than a chicken!!

With serious trepidation, I walk over to where she is and take a peek at what she's chewing on.

It's PANSY, my poor crookneck silkie. She's totally wet, a pile of loose feathers flying around and still as death. Oh poo, the pup has gone and killed a chicken....

I pull the dog off the chicken - she looks up a me like 'hey mom, I was playing with that...' and reach down to pick up Pansy's poor, lifeless body. She's just laying there with her eyes closed and her feet up in the air....so sad....

As soon as I touch her to pick her up, she pops up, and runs off!!

Other than a few lost feathers, she's none the worse for wear. Lily (the pup) was just mouthing her gently - never even broke the skin or caused any damage at all!!

What did I learn?? That my pup, while thinking the chickens are potential playmates, DOESN'T think they are potential meals, and that chickens do play dead...

I moved my chickens out to the coop that has a brooder in it, at night I had to go out and put them under the brooder or they would just huddle in a corner, one night I put the chickens under the light and then was messing with the automatic waterer when out of the dark I here another chicken I had missed, she chirped at me for a while reading me the riot act, so I put her under the light, the next night as I was putting them under the light the same chicken walked out of the corner gives me a sarcastic peep over her shoulder and walks in her self, I guess I get only one error with her, good thing was the other chickens started following her now I do not have to put them in anymore.

I have babies I hatched out 2 weeks ago tomorrow. One hatched with a curled up foot. Well, thanks to BYC I knew just what do do. I made a nice litte pink cardboard boot. Taped it nice and secure with a waterproof bandaid. Next morning the boot is off and the chick has a nice little smug look. I repeat the process. A few hours later I look and same thing, boot off, chicken happy. One more time, this time I use butterfly closures then the bandaid on top. I think there is NO WAY this brat can get it off, so I sit and watch. She plops down on her rear and all 9 of the other babies come over and start tugging until it is removed and she happily gets up and goes off to play. *sigh* no clue what to do at this point but for now she is running around on her crooked foot.

I have 5 chickens who are about 9 weeks old. My little cockerel, Star....a barred rock...is already showing signs of being a great rooster. One of my neighbors was over looking at the chickens and had her dog with her. The dog walked to the door of the chickie house to look in. 4 of them ran to the back wall and started squaking. Star went right to the door and puffed up and looked just as mean as a sweet little baby can look until the dog walked away. He then turned to me with the proudest look I have ever seen. He is gonna be a good boy!!!!!
