I went out to feed the goats and let the birds out this morning, and while I was filling water buckets, a great horned owl started hooting really close to the pen. I was going to let the chickens out, but decided to wait until I get done with my morning bus route-----it will be light out then. I did let the ducks and geese out, but am wondering, would a great horned owl be able to carry off one of my ducks? I'm mainly worried about my little black runner hen-------she's quite a bit lighter than the others.

Well, hopefully the goats and the barn cat will be something of a deterrant to the owl. Hey, maybe it was just after the rodents who have been sneaking around the chicken coop!?

I GHO is probably one of the worste predators to have around, there bossy, and just down right mean. there is no way to make them leave there stubborn and hard headed. keep the kids safe while the sun is down till he realizes theres no food there for him and pray he moves on.

We used to have great horned owls come up into barn lot at night. Chickens were safe so long as roosting in buildings with livestock. Owls targeted rats moving between buildings. They were catching rats, just not enough to prevent theft of corn and damage to feed sacks.
