i just purchased my home in oct of last year. now that my garden is started i wanted to get 6 or 8 hens to provide my family with eggs. we go through a dozen every other day. we are trying to be more self suffient but our town wont allow us to be. we had to even deal with restrictions to where we can plant fruit, veggies and herbs. when i went further into the towns codes i realized the town of roxhester, which i am a mile north of allows 30 hens with 25 ft restrictions away from dwellings and irondequoit , where i am 3 miles away from , allows 5 with similar restrictions... and both dont allow roosters. greece has only allowed 2 people to have chickens on lots less than 10 acres... both were over a half a acre but under 1 acre. while only 2 other ppl applied and were denied since 2009. i have .28 acres and have 2 commericial neighbors (home improvement place and hair salon) and 1 neighbor that is behind me. well course there are others butnone that touch my property line. ive spoke to them all and none have a issue if theres no roosters or smell. i have spoke to the zone officer of my town and they said i have to pay 140 to get a applications to go against the zoning laws in y town.as well as a list of things i need to do and a pile of papers to fill out. anyone else in greece ny that wants chickens tht want to team up to try and change the zoning laws? does anyone have any ideas or dvice on how to change thw zoning laws? tia
