I've joined up here because I've got my first backyard farming project under way. My quail coop is about a third finished (took a pause to re-evaluate my design and construction method) and I figure I could do worse than use you folks for "tech support."
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I was born next door to an egg farm. Literally. My first job (when I was about 5) was yanking hens off their nests and gathering eggs. And I got paid in eggs. However, this will be my first attempt at raising poultry of my own.
One of my "fondest" childhood memories is living downwind from the aroma of 25,000 layers.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Probably three or four, but they're all in the freezer.
(3) What breeds do you have?
For starters I plan on raising cotournix. Baby steps first.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I'm retired and have too much spare time on my hands. This gives me something to do that also adds an element of resiliency to my lifestyle.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Mostly I complain about the government. If I have time left over, I collect foreign tennis balls and knit humorous cummerbunds (a tip 'o the hat to George Carlin).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
As soon as the quail coop is done (and I've got eggs in the incubator) I intend to start work on a rabbit hutch. So the coop is sort of a dry run for the hutch. And if I it proves to be too much for my fabrication skills, I still can bail out and the lesson hasn't been that costly.
Still looking for the right piece of land so I can move to the country and free-range some layers, and maybe raise some American guinea hogs and/or hair sheep to round out the larder.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
BYC kept coming up in my searches when I was gathering information on what breed of quail a noob should start with, and what was involved in breeding/raising them. And as things start taking shape I find I the list of things I figure I need to know keeps getting longer, and BYC impressed me as the best place to go to get that sort of info.
